Frequently Asked Questions

Working With Us

  • How can I get started?

Give us a call or email us, and we’ll get you set up with an appointment.

  • What kind of deposit do you require?

We require a 75% deposit on all custom pieces. No deposit is needed for installation, but that portion is due upon completion.

  • Do you do site visits?

Yes, we encourage them for specific projects. The site visit fee will go toward your project.

  • Will you do the installation?

We sure can! It’s our specialty to see a project through from design, build, finish, and installation.

  • What if my builder wants to install?

We work with builders to provide the best possible installation solutions. Once the materials leave Heritage Beam and Board, the installer is responsible.

  • Can you do it all for me—design, build, finish, and install?

    Yes, it’s our specialty!

  • Do I need an appointment?

Yes. We’d love to be best prepared to meet with you and focus on you.

  • Do I have to come in for an appointment?

We offer phone consults, but ultimately, we want you to see and feel the wood prior to making a final selection.

  • Will you come to my house for an appointment?

We do site visits for a fee.

  • What kind of measurements do I need to provide you?

General measurements are helpful during our initial appointment. Otherwise, we’ll take measurements ourselves when needed.

  • Do I need to bring anything with me to my appointment?

Yes! Inspiration photos, site pictures, and rough measurements help us prepare for a productive and creative consultation.

  • Where are you located?

Elkhorn, Wisconsin; just north of Lake Geneva.

Materials & Custom Projects

  • What do I do when I just want raw material?

Book an appointment with our materials specialist. Bring your materials list—we’ll help fulfill your order.

  • Can you use wood that I provide (reclaimed or felled trees)?

Yes. First question: is it sentimental? If so, we’d be honored to create something meaningful. Keep in mind: drying time, condition, and compatibility may affect the process. If the wood is from felled trees, it can take up to an inch per year to dry.

  • What species of wood do you offer?

Our reclaimed selection includes Douglas Fir, White Pine, Oak, Hemlock, in addition to regional hardwoods. We call it “the species of reclaimed”—each piece with its own story.

  • Can you match my custom stain?

Yes! Depending on the wood you select, we are able to do a custom color match.

  • What type of finishes do you offer?

We have 11 proprietary finishes—and we’re happy to work with you on a custom look that suits your style.

  • Do you provide renderings?

Yes. All custom projects include renderings that require client approval prior to production.

  • Do you do projects that don’t include reclaimed wood?

We do! If your project includes reclaimed wood, we can often support you with complementary new materials—like shiplap or trim—to complete the look.

  • Do you build cabinets?

Our specialty is custom islands, bars, and signature furniture pieces. If your cabinetry idea is in that wheelhouse—let’s talk!

  • Do you make mantels?

We do. We make, finish, and install them. We also have mantels that are ready to be taken cash & carry. See more HERE.

Salvage & Sourcing

  • What if I have a barn I would like taken down?

We’d love to take a look. Please send pictures to our team. info@heritagebeamandboard.com

  • Where does your wood come from?

We source our materials from across the Midwest—mainly Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, and Illinois.

  • What is a board foot?

A board foot is a unit of measurement used to accurately measure lumber. Think of it as a 12" x 12" square that's 1" thick. Two inches thick? That’s two board feet. It’s the industry standard when quoting materials.

  • Do you have architectural salvage?

We do! Contact us to inquire.

Shipping, Pickup & Travel

  • Do you ship your products?

We can. Ideally, we’d meet in person to discuss the color, level of character, and the things that are best done on-site. Shipping costs are calculated separately.

  • How far do you travel?

We’ve delivered projects as far south as Florida—but our primary focus is Wisconsin and Illinois. Have a special project in mind? Let’s chat.
